Why when there are many star hotels? I don't know. Perhaps his love for Old "Raj" Keralan/English mansion in beautiful gardens, not far from city center and a beautiful small lake.A fin de sïècle feeling for a budget price. Large rooms with high ceilings and a 40 acres of lush green land. Wow! I loved it. (The telephone number of the Government Guest House: +91-474-2743620)
We dropped the idea of visiting Kovalam, the famous beach on the world tourist map. Too crowded and too expensive, we felt so. And then the idea struck us. Why not VARKALA? Tommy Singh looked at me keenly finishing the remains of vodka and announed,
"yes, we are going to Varkala tomorrow!"
A 40 minutes beautiful ride from Kollam and we were at VARKALA and lodged ourselves at CLIFOUTI BEACH RESORT VARKALA. Access was a little difficult with the last stretch of road very narrow and almost non existent. The property was very small adjoining the main Clafouti restaurant along the Cliff walkway adjoining various other hotels/restaurants. The room though small, had a beautiful traditional finish. The Cliff view was awesome and there was a small common access via a steep stairway to the beach below.
We visited the beach, immediately after our breakfast.
My goodness! It was awesome! The beach was backed by a sheer cliff wall. Several steps were cut into the cliff and lead to the cliff top path, where Kashmiri souvenir sellers, fish restaurants and vendors vie each other for tourists.
Later we proceeded for the Golden Island of Ponnumthuruth. This beautiful Island can be reached by boat. The cruise to the the island for us was a memorable one!
The other places we visited were:
- Janardana Swami Temple (2000 years old)
- Varkala Light House
- Anjengo Fort: Near to Varkala was the site of the Dutch East India Company's main garrison, Anjengo Fort.
- Kappil Lake: Kappil boat club was a recent venture in the back water tourism in the area. Kappil is 6 km north of Varkala.
Varkala (Malayalam : വര്ക്കല ) is a coastal town and municipality in Thiruvananthapuram district situated in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the suburban town of Thiruvananthapuram(Trivandrum city). It is located 50 kilometres (approx. 32 miles) north-west of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and 37 km south-west of Kollam city.
Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These tertiary sedimentary formation cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and is known among geologists as Varkala Formation and a geological monument as declared by the Geological Survey of India. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs.
